The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Unión (KMPDU) officials led by National Secretary General, Davji Atellah, paid a courtesy call on Moi Teaching & Referral Hospital (MTRH) CEO, Dr. Wilson K. Aruasa, MBS, EBS on 19th October, 2021.

The CEO welcomed the visit noting that it demonstrates strategic partnership between KMPDU and MTRH, dating back to 2012.
He stated that MTRH was the first healthcare institution in the country to sign a Recognition Agreement with KMPDU, followed by signing of the first Return-to-Work Formula in the 2016/17 Financial Year during a Board Meeting.
“Our relationship with the Union has been engaging and cordial based on the principles of flexibility, adaptability and transparency, ” he added.
Dr. Aruasa said the Hospital Leadership values labour movement as it is a platform for nurturing leaders among Doctors and all Healthcare Staff.
He observed that MTRH has highly-skilled and specialized staff and all cadres( Clinical and Corporate) are acknowledged and supported to discharge their mandate effectively.
MTRH CEO also expressed gratitude to the Union for always being available to MTRH leadership, when reached, and for inviting him to their launch of the first KMPDU Strategic Plan in March, 2020, a document he said is progressive.
MTRH was also the first to sign a 2017-2020 CBA with KMPDU which was fully implemented and the successor CBA currently being negotiated by the two parties. Further, MTRH Board has provided a Comprehensive Staff Medical Cover and Professional Indemnity( PI) Cover as provided for in the Health Act, 2017/18.
Dr. Aruasa reiterated that MTRH Staff are guided by skills of the future; some of which include; Curiosity to ever learn more, Effective Communication and Positive yet Constant Change in their service to humanity.And that the greatest Pillar in Quality Healthcare Delivery.
The CEO stated that apprenticeship model of training has been adopted by MTRH Board and supported by Ministry of Health. The Hospital has since been accredited by Medical Practitioners & Dentists Council( MPDC) to offer Postgraduate Training in Neurosurgery and Anaesthesiology under the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA), the largest Surgical Training institution in Sub-Saharan Africa. Other trainings being ECSACOP for Physicians training, COSECSA in General Surgery and another one in Orthopaedics & Trauma Surgery.
On his part, the KMPDU Secretary General, appreciated the role played by MTRH Leadership in supporting Doctors and adopting an open-door/ listening policy as well as appointing and supporting Doctors & all Staff in Leadership/ Management positions.
He stated that MTRH’s contribution to quality health service delivery in Kenya is immense courtesy of proactive and focused leadership that should be emulated by other Hospitals.
Dr. Attelah said: “MTRH is a leader in healthcare, without doubt, they follow through all approved HR Policies and are proactive in labour issues including CBA negotiations. We look forward to more engagements.” He also emohasized on provisions of Article 43, Constitution of Kenya that Healthcare is a Basic Right to the people of Kenya, lauding MTRH for effective contribution towards fulfilment of this right and to the Universal Health Coverage( UHC) National Agenda.
