Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital’s Directorate of Dental Services is embracing new technologies and endeavors on continuous improvement in line with global dental standards. The Directorate aims to serve the ever-increasing number of patients seeking specialized dental services in: Preventive, curative and rehabilitative dentistry.
The Directorate at MTRH offers both surgical and non-surgical therapies in various dental specialties and is a key national center for dental internship and industrial attachments. The Directorate of Dental services also has an equipped Dental Laboratory that fabricates dental prostheses (replacements) and dental appliances.
Advances from the Directorate includes the introduction of prosthetic dental implant therapy for the replacement of missing teeth. This was the first ever Public Hospital to offer and carry out prosthetic dental implant surgery in Kenya.
With the current COVID-19 pandemic, the Unit improved work place and client safety during carrying out emergency aerosolizing dental procedures with the use of advanced and innovative portable Vacuum Stations and well as laid out COVID-19 dental protocols that have been a benchmark for various centers.
Our Dental Suites are located on the first floor of MTRH main Outpatient building. Being a leading multi-specialty for dental and oral health care the Directorate has a multi-disciplinary team in various specialties including;
- Oral and Maxillofacial surgery
- Conservative dentistry and Prosthodontics
- Periodontics
- Orthodontics
- Dental Officers
- Community Oral Health officers
- Dental Lab Technologists
- Nurses
The Directorate offers both Inpatient and Outpatient services.
Outpatient services offered include:
- Consultation
- Conservative dentistry i.e. fillings, root canal treatment.
- Oral Maxillofacial Surgery e.g. extractions, disimpactions, cyst enucleation and biopsies
- Periodontal therapy: teeth cleaning and gum surgery
- Orthodontics: braces
Inpatient services include: Open reduction and fixation (ORIF) for facial fractures in patients, resection for patients with tumors and those needing reconstruction.
Rehabilitative services include teeth replacement using various orofacial prosthesis
The Directorate participates in outreaches within MTRH’s catchment area: NOREB counties, Western Kenya and beyond.
The Centre offers Community Oral Health function by providing dental primary clinical care including; screening of oral conditions, investigations, diagnosis, preventive & promotive dental management, and drug prescription. This is geared towards attainment of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) agenda.
