Hospital celebrates Mental Health Day
The World Mental Health Day was marked on 12th October 2018 under the theme: “Youth and Mental Health in a changing world.”
MTRH celebrated this year’s WMHD starting with a walk from Chandaria Cancer and Chronic Disease Centre, through Eldoret town and around the Hospital creating awareness amongst the public.
The Director of Mental Health Mrs. Jane Kariuki represented MTRH CEO Dr. Wilson K. Aruasa at the event held at Memorial Grounds.
The outpatient section of the mental health Department at MTRH gives access to everyone, including prisoners, and also helps extreme victims of drug abuse. On the other end, the rehabilitation unit educates nurses and clinical officers besides supporting the primary mental health unit.
While focusing on prevention, it is equally important to consider risk and protective factors. A lot of effort should be directed towards fighting stigmatization.
“As we mark this day, the work the entire workforce of MTRH has put in, cannot go unappreciated. The Hospital offers services of the highest quality,” Mrs. Jane Kariuki said.
“The World Mental Health Day is marked so as to increase awareness and reduce the rampant social stigma in the country,” she added.
“Depression and suicide are the most common causes of death among the youth. Prevention of mental health, in a broad sense, includes teaching, training and medication,” she concluded.
