{"id":1171,"date":"2024-04-22T22:21:39","date_gmt":"2024-04-22T19:21:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mtrh.go.ke\/?p=1171"},"modified":"2024-04-23T09:26:01","modified_gmt":"2024-04-23T06:26:01","slug":"mtrh-celebrates-cured-xdr-tb-patient","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mtrh.go.ke\/?p=1171","title":{"rendered":"MTRH Celebrates Cured XDR-TB Patient"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) today celebrated successful treatment of an Extensively Drug- Resistant Tuberculosis, (XDR -TB) patient who has been receiving treatment in the Hospital since 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SKK was identified through a community outreach by Neighbors In Action Kenya (NIAK) in Tiaty, Baringo County.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Preliminary investigations showed that he had Tuberculous. Initial smear cultures was done and the patient started on treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From 2018, the patient did not respond to first line medication prompting the Hospital to dispatch other sets of culture for investigations to National Government Laboratory in Nairobi and Centre for Disease Control in Kisumu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That set of investigation showed the patient had XDR TB and subsequently was put on various regimes of treatment in January 2022 with the treatment involving over one thousand (1000) injections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While speaking on the successful diagnosis of the patient, the attending Consultant, Prof. Lameck Diero lauded the multi-disciplinary approach to patient care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Hospital Ag. CEO Dr. Philip Kirwa appreciated the Hospital teams who walked the treatment journey with the patient since 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We appreciate all the partners led by the National Government Laboratory, AMPATH, AMREF, Neighbors In Action and Global TB Fund for the enormous work done towards the successful treatment of the patient.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also expressed gratitude to the patient for the positive mindset and resilience in following through necessary treatment and care by MTRH.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said MTRH has demonstrated high level of research and medical care that sets it apart in the country and way beyond the borders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Present during the milestone celebrations were ; representatives from National TB Program, the Chief Officer Health Uasin Gishu County, County Director Health, County TB Coordinator, AMPATH Team led by the Chief of Party, MTRH Ag.
