Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), in collaboration with Moi University and the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA), successfully conducted a two-day Basic Surgical Skills Course on 25\u201326 February 2026, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening surgical training and advancing clinical excellence.

\u200eThe intensive hands-on course brought together trainees from the General Surgery MMED, COSECSA MCS programmes, and Obstetrics and Gynecology, reflecting a multi-disciplinary approach to surgical education. The structured curriculum, aligned with COSECSA training standards, covered essential competencies including theatre safety, sterile techniques, knot-tying, bowel and vascular anastomosis, ureteric repair, chest tube insertion, principles of external fixation, and cast application.

\u200eBeyond technical procedures, the training emphasized operating theatre professionalism, communication, teamwork, and patient safety, underscoring that high-quality surgical outcomes depend on both strong technical skills and effective collaboration among healthcare teams.

\u200eThe course was delivered through small-group practical stations and expert-led demonstrations, supported by theatre equipment and training consumables, enabling participants to gain hands-on experience within a structured and supportive learning environment.

\u200eThe team also recognized the support of the Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Philip K. Kirwa, whose institutional leadership made the training possible.
