MTRH Celebrates World Heart Day

Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) today joined the rest of the world in marking the World Heart Day which is celebrated every year on 29th September.

The Head of Cardiology Department at MTRH , Dr. Felix Barasa said that cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are a leading cause of death.

He said: “triggering these diseases – which manifest primarily as heart attacks and strokes – are tobacco use, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity and the use of alcohol.”

This in turn shows up in people as raised blood pressure, elevated blood glucose and overweight & obesity, risks detrimental to good heart health.

Dr. Barasa and team sensitized the public to: do more exercises, total tobacco cessation and alcohol intake and reduce salt intake as well. They also advised that people should go for regular check-ups for blood sugar levels and blood pressure.

The team conducted free screening and sensitization on heart-related conditions. A total of 320 members of the public were screened and appropriately referred in case of need to MTRH for further follow up.

Present during the celebration were: Director Internal Medicine, Dr. Wilson Sugut, Senior Physician, Dr. David Lagat, Ag. Senior Assistant Director Nursing Services, Elijah Koros, Cardiology team, MTRH staff and members of the public.
