MTRH observes International Day against Drug Abuse

The day is aimed at strengthening action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse.

With the world in the 21st century awash with complex issues of substance abuse, the day serves to strengthen protocols in Government and bodies which are used to sensitize populations on the dangers of substance abuse. It also comes as a duty that targets young people who by default are the majority of those who abuse drugs.

As part of the Hospital’s mission to reach out to the public, MTRH marked the day at Memorial grounds, where free screening was conducted and free counselling done. The team was led by Dr. Edith Kwobah who represented the Hospital Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Wilson K. Aruasa.

While making her remarks, Dr. Kwobah emphasized to staff and the public not to indulge in drinking of alcohol and use of drugs. “Quit drinking and substance abuse in order to lead a healthy and productive life, ” she said.

This year’s theme highlights that justice and health are two sides of the same coin when it comes to addressing drug problems.

The event was graced by the police narcotics unit as well as National Agency for the Campaign Against Drug Abuse (NACADA) who displayed various drugs and shared Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials to the public.[responsivevoice_button voice=”UK English Female” buttontext=”Listen to Post”]
