EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT

The Emergency Department (ED) of Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital is located at the main entrance of the Hospital. ED houses critical care room, emergency surgery ward, emergency medical ward, an equipped radiology unit, cash points, NHIF, public health (immunization Centre), minor theatre, pharmacy, routine lab and outpatient services

The billing office offers billing services for clients whose patients passed on at ED and those who are under observation.

Emergency Unit is divided into two;

  1. Ambulatory – only the stable patients are attended to from this section.
  2. Emergency – patients who are critically ill are first stabilized in emergency room then transferred to room 5 and 14 for further decision making i.e. be discharged home, go for surgery or needs an internal medicine specialist. This is where coding is done to patients (Red, Yellow, Green and Black) depending on their critical level.

Once the patients have been seen at the various consultation rooms, they are either booked for a consultant, if need be, or are discharged home.

The Emergency Department has a dedicated Referral Nurse who co-ordinates all the County Hospital referrals and those from private health facilities as well as advising them on whether MTRH provides the required services.

Minor Theatre-this is in room 19 and various activities take place here namely:

  • Circumcision
  • Ulcer/wound dressing
