Cardiac Team Records Milestone at MTRH

Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) has successfully conducted its first-ever Coronary Angiogram Camp, held from Friday, June 20 to Saturday, June 21, 2025.

‎This landmark 2-day event marks the first time such procedures have been performed in the North and Western regions of Kenya—and within a public healthcare facility.

‎A coronary angiogram is a minimally invasive imaging procedure that uses contrast dye and X-ray technology to visualize coronary arteries. It’s crucial for diagnosing blockages, narrowing, or abnormalities in heart blood flow—particularly in patients with chest pain, shortness of breath, or abnormal stress test results.

‎The camp saw six (6) patients undergo both diagnostic and interventional coronary procedures, made possible through a collaboration between MTRH and Aga Khan University Hospital.

‎Dr. Ayub Barasa, Head of Cardiology at MTRH, emphasized that coronary angiograms not only confirm the presence of coronary artery disease but also allow for immediate treatment—such as stent placement—reducing repeat visits and overall costs.

‎The CEO, Dr. Philip Kirwa thanked the Government of Kenya through the Ministry of Health for enabling specialized care services under the Social Health Authority (SHA).

‎He encouraged the public to continuously register into SHA, noting that clients would benefit immensely.

‎We appreciate the visiting team from Aga Khan University Hospital led by Dr. Jeilan Mohammed and Dr. Etienne Amendezo; MTRH team led by Dr. Ayub Barasa, Dr. Wilson Sugut, Dr. Joan Kiyeng and Dr. David Lagat, alongside Nursing, Radiology & Biomedical staff.

This initiative marks a huge step forward towards accessible and life-saving cardiac care for the region.
