MTRH and Partners Strengthen Leadership Development Through Pamoja Tustawi

Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), in partnership with IU Health, Moi University and AMPATH, has reaffirmed its commitment to leadership development as a key driver of sustainable institutional transformation and quality healthcare delivery.

The renewed commitment builds on the institutions’ longstanding collaboration in clinical excellence, medical training, research and health systems strengthening. It also marks the evolution of the Women in Leadership Programme into Pamoja Tustawi – Together We Thrive, an inclusive leadership development initiative bringing together leaders from MTRH, Moi University and AMPATH, with IU Health as a key partner.

Speaking during the engagement, Dr. Andrew Wandera, Chair of the Programme Steering Committee, emphasized that healthcare transformation extends beyond infrastructure and clinical expertise. He noted that it requires effective leadership, a positive organizational culture, accountable systems and a shared vision to deliver safe, responsive, high-quality and patient-centred care.

Through mentorship, shared learning and knowledge exchange, Pamoja Tustawi seeks to nurture ethical, accountable, innovative and transformative leaders while strengthening staff engagement, organizational performance and institutional resilience.

The partnership draws on the complementary strengths of the participating institutions: MTRH’s expertise in specialized healthcare, Moi University’s role in medical education and research, AMPATH’s experience in collaborative healthcare and health systems strengthening, and IU Health’s expertise in leadership development and organizational learning.

Dr. Kipchumba B. Tarus, Senior Director of Administration and Finance, representing the CEO, reaffirmed the Hospital’s commitment to translating lessons from the initiative into measurable improvements in leadership effectiveness, staff engagement and patient care. He highlighted the importance of continuous learning, open communication, evidence-based decision-making and accountability for results.
