Medical Engineering
The department handles Engineering works in the Hospital including: construction design and implementation, repair and maintenance of plant and infrastructure. The department has 68 members of staff with variety of trades like; Electrical, Plumbing, Mechanical, Carpentry, Building and Civil.
The department is headed by Hospital Engineer assisted by two deputies; first deputy is in-charge of projects and civil works and second deputy is in-charge of maintenance activities and staff welfare. They are assisted by coordinators who cover different Directorates of the Hospital and have a mix of trade skills under them.
For the past years, the department has been involved in the development of most of the infrastructure within the Hospital including; Academic Model Providing Access to Health (AMPATH), Mental Health, Riley Mother & Baby Hospital (RMBH), Shoe4Africa Children Hospital, Chandaria Cancer and Chronic Disease Center (CCCDC), Modern Laundry and Kitchen, Simulation Lab, Eat and Run Kitchen and Incinerator building.
ELECTRICAL
This section is charged with ensuring that the Hospital is well lit at night and power is available in all points of need. Over the years, the section has improved installation of power backups to ensure that power is available when the mains fails. So far, 98% of the Hospital is connected to the back-up with some areas having a second back-up. The section has also ensured that the Hospital gets Uninterruptable Power Supply by installing UPSs in most sensitive areas to prevent machine damage when power is not stable.
PLUMBING
This unit is charged with ensuring that water is available in all points of use and the systems are working both for supplying clean water and discharging waste water safely. Currently the unit is working on the installation of water reservoir tanks for various places within the Hospital. Areas that have already benefited are CCCDC, Renal Unit and Mental Health Unit. The one Shoe4Africa is on-going.
PROJECTS
The unit oversees both big and small building projects and ensures that standards are maintained and projects delivered to the Hospital within time and of quality. The most recent being the modern Laundry and Kitchen.
The unit also oversees civil works and beautification of the Hospital by ensuring that the old buildings conforms to the required standards; construction of ramps, roads and walkways and also painting of buildings and making of signage(s).
CARPENTRY
The unit is charged with maintenance of wood/timber fittings and furniture. They also install shelves in various departments and install dry wall (partitioning) within the Hospital.
MECHANICAL
The unit is charged with fabrication, repairs and maintenance of metallic equipment. The unit recently fabricated a Braun’s Splint equipment for plaster department.
OFFICE
The Department also gives technical advice to management in terms of land utilization as ELD MUN. BLOCK 7/308, 125 and 126, master plan upgrading which was done in 2018.
