Nutrition & Dietetics Department

The Department is committed to providing specialized healthcare services, training and research through efficient,execellent clinical nutritional services and operational processes and contributing to National development. The purpose of the department is to provide optimal nutrition services to both patients in the hospital.

Nutritionists & Dieticians are health care professionals who  provide medical nutrition therapy to manage the treatment of hospitalized patients and those living with any nutrition- related disease by use of diet.

The department transitioned from Uasin Gishu District hospital to Moi Teaching  & Referral Hospital in July,2000. The  Department is under the Directorate of Pharmacy & Nutrition and is headed by Head of Department who oversees day to day operations.
The Department provides a comprehensive clinical nutrition care services  both  to  inpatient and  outpatients  in the hospital.

The Nutritionists conducts the nutritional assessment and identifies nutritional disorders, deficiencies and  malnutrition.

The nutritional diagnosis is made to identify and describe a specific nutrition problem that can be resolved or improved through nutrition treatment/ intervention by use of  a normal diet or a modified feed.

Nutrition intervention is determined to resolve or improve the nutrition diagnosis by provision of nutritional counselling, education or prescription of a specific diet or meal plan tailored to patient nutritional needs and requirement.

 It’s clearly selected is directed to the root cause of the nutrition problem  aimed at alleviating the signs and symptoms of the diagnosis.

Dietitians/nutritionists can discuss nutritional needs for home use with the family and can provide education on normal nutrition and any modifications that may be needed for special diets once patient is discharged.
