MTRH and Angels Initiative Strengthen Stroke Care Capacity in North Rift

Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), with support from the Angels Initiative, has concluded the second Multidisciplinary Stroke Management Training programme in Eldoret, further strengthening stroke care capacity across the North Rift region.

The four-day training, held at Eka Hotel, brought together healthcare professionals from multiple disciplines to enhance skills in stroke recognition, emergency management, acute treatment, critical care, rehabilitation and recovery.

The first phase of the programme, conducted in August 2026, trained 110 healthcare workers. A further 160 healthcare workers were trained during the second phase, bringing the total number trained to 270.

The programme was jointly initiated and led by Dr. Daisy Korir, Consultant Physician and Deputy Head of the Emergency Department at MTRH, and Dr. Jamil Said, Consultant Physician and Neurologist at MTRH/Moi University, both members of the MTRH Stroke Committee.

“Every minute matters when it comes to stroke care,” said Dr. Korir. “We are empowering our teams to make a difference where it matters most—improving stroke care and patient outcomes.”

The training was officially opened by Dr. Andrew Wandera, Senior Director of Clinical Services at MTRH on behalf of the CEO Dr. Philip Kirwa, who reaffirmed the Hospital’s commitment to patient-centred, coordinated and multidisciplinary care.

The initiative is part of MTRH’s broader ambition to train healthcare workers across Eldoret and the wider North Rift in stroke recognition and management by December 2026. In the long term, the programme aims to strengthen community and referring-facility recognition of stroke, accelerate emergency referral and treatment, improve critical care and rehabilitation, and establish MTRH as a comprehensive stroke hub serving the region.
