‎MTRH, MU CHS Partner with Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital and Wits University for Clinical and Academic Collaboration

Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) alongside Moi University’s College of Health Sciences (MU CHS), is engaging Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital and the College of Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits University), South Africa; a move aimed at forging strategic partnership for joint clinical, training, research, and exchange programs.

‎The discussion will cultimate in formulation of a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will support staff and student exchanges, shared use of clinical training resources, and identification/adoption of best practices.

‎The collaboration will span multiple areas including clinical care, academic development, research, and innovation.

‎The proposed programs are designed to strengthen healthcare capacity and promote knowledge exchange between Kenya and South Africa, with a focus on specialized and sub-specialized fields.

‎Core components will include; mentorship, postgraduate medical education, capacity building, and collaborative research initiatives.

‎Prof. Ashraf Coovadia, Academic Head of the Department of Pediatrics and Child Health at Wits University, who was in Eldoret on 6th & 7th July, 2025, represented the South African delegation. He paid a courtesy call on MTRH CEO Dr. Philip Kirwa at his office.

‎While welcoming the partnership, Dr. Kirwa observed that it will be key in strengthening capacity for Human Resources for Health (HRH) adding that most specialized services at MTRH have grown out of such partnerships which impact quality and breadth of healthcare services both locally and regionally.

‎During the visit, Prof. Coovadia accompanied by Dr. Philip Cheptinga- Head of the Nephrology Unit, toured Shoe4Africa Children’s Hospital, Renal Unit, Intensive Care Unit, Neonatal Unit, AMPATH Centre, MRI Suite, and the Catheterization Laboratory (Cath Lab).

‎Also present were Dr. Julia Songok, Dean of the MU School of Medicine, along with MTRH Peadiatrics Team Dr. Eric Ngetich, Dr. Festus Njuguna, Dr. Joram Nyandat, Dr. Jacqueline Nyandat, and Dr. Audrey Chepkemoi.
