Cardiothoracic Services
Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) offers a comprehensive range of advanced cardiothoracic and vascular procedures, delivered by a highly skilled multidisciplinary team. Our services cater to patients with heart, lung, esophageal, and vascular conditions, using both open and minimally invasive techniques.
Our Key Procedures Include:
🔹 Open-Heart Surgery
Performed to treat heart valve defects, congenital abnormalities, and blocked arteries, open-heart surgery involves opening the chest to access and repair the heart.
🔹 Bronchoscopy
A diagnostic procedure using a flexible tube to visualize the airways and lungs, allowing for the assessment and treatment of respiratory conditions.
🔹 Lung Resection
Surgical removal of part or all of a lung, commonly performed to treat lung cancer, infections, or severe lung disease.
🔹 Thoracotomy and Decortication
Involves opening the chest wall to remove thickened tissue (pleural peel) that restricts lung expansion, often due to infection or chronic inflammation.
🔹 Esophagectomy
Surgical removal of all or part of the esophagus, usually done to treat esophageal cancer or advanced damage to the esophageal lining.
🔹 Endoscopic Esophageal Closure
A minimally invasive technique used to close esophageal perforations or tears using an endoscope.
🔹 Arteriovenous (AV) Fistula Creation
A procedure that connects an artery and a vein, providing access for life-saving hemodialysis in patients with kidney failure.
🔹 Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) Closure
Closure of an abnormal blood vessel between the aorta and pulmonary artery that persists after birth, preventing strain on the heart and lungs.
🔹 Aortic Aneurysm Repair
Surgical intervention to repair bulging or weakened sections of the aorta, helping prevent rupture or dissection.
🔹 Heller’s Cardiomyotomy
Performed on patients with achalasia, this procedure helps relax the lower esophageal sphincter, improving swallowing and reducing discomfort.
🔹 Vascular Injury Repair
Emergency or planned surgical repair of damaged blood vessels to restore circulation and prevent bleeding or tissue damage.
🔹 Chest Tube Insertion
Placement of a tube into the chest cavity to remove fluid, blood, or air—commonly used for collapsed lungs, infections, or trauma.
🔹 Pericardiostomy
Creates an opening in the pericardial sac to drain fluid and relieve pressure around the heart, often in cases of pericardial effusion.
🔹 Pericardial Window
A surgical opening made in the pericardium to allow continuous drainage of excess fluid into the chest cavity, preventing recurrence. At MTRH, we are committed to offering timely, specialized, and patient-centered cardiothoracic care. For consultations or referrals, please contact our Cardiothoracic Unit.
