MTRH and Uasin Gishu County Government Mark World Cancer Day

Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), in collaboration with the County Government of Uasin Gishu, marked World Cancer Day during a colourful event held at the Uasin Gishu County Headquarters grounds.

The event brought together health professionals, county officials, partners, cancer survivors, and members of the public to raise awareness on cancer prevention, early detection, and access to quality cancer care.

The County Government of Uasin Gishu was represented by Dr. Wangwe Ongeti, the Chief Officer Health, who underscored the County’s efforts in improving cancer care services, including screening programs and referral systems.

He called on residents to take advantage of available health services and prioritize regular check-ups emphasizing that the County has designated Pioneer Health Centre as the primary health care facility for cancer screening.

Speaking during the event, MTRH Ag. CEO Dr. Andrew Wandera reaffirmed the

Hospital’s commitment to strengthening cancer services through early diagnosis, treatment, and community education.

He affirmed the importance of partnerships, especially between National Referral Hospitals and County Governments in the fight against cancer.

The Chief Guest, Mama Salina Bii, First Lady of Uasin Gishu County, championed the importance of preventive healthcare and pledged continued support for cancer awareness initiatives targeting women, youth, and vulnerable populations.

The event was also graced by the First Lady of Turkana County, Lilian Ekamais, Christine Tonui, Director Health Administration-MTRH, Dr. Jesse Opakas, Director Hemato-Oncology -MTRH, and Consultants from MTRH, Moi University, and UG County.

Partners included: Lodwar County Referral Hospital, Eldoret Oncology Associates, Eldoret Hospice, Eldoret Hospital, Eldobase Limited, and Living Room International, among others.

World Cancer Day is observed globally to unite communities, organizations, and governments in the fight against cancer and to inspire action towards saving lives.
