Japanese Ambassador to Kenya H.E. Hiroshi Matsuura Hands over MTRH’S 1.5 Tesla MRI Machine and Ambulance
The Japanese Ambassador to Kenya H.E. Hiroshi Matsuura, today, 19th December 2024, handed over two new projects at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH).
The new 1.5 Tesla MRI located at MTRH’s Memorial wing will scale up healthcare service provision to thousands of patients from the 25 counties in Western Kenya and beyond.
Ambassador Hiroshi in his remarks said Japan is happy to collaborate with Kenya in many areas of healthcare, saying this new 1.5 Tesla MRI acquired through a Japanese grant to Kenya is part of the projects under the bilateral arrangement to give Kenyan people better healthcare.
Ambassador Hiroshi said more collaborative areas between Kenya and Japan will be highlighted during the 9th Tokyo Development Conference in August 2025 to be held in the city of Yokohama, saying Japan is happy to work together with Kenya.
He was impressed by MTRH’s enormous role of covering half of Kenya in healthcare provision.
He lauded the Hospital through the leadership of the Board Chairman, Mr. Sitoyo Lopokoiyit, and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Philip Kirwa to continue guiding the institution that is giving millions of Kenyans access to healthcare.
The Hospital Board Chair hailed the collaboration, saying the new MRI will strengthen the Hospital operations by giving it an edge in managing huge number of cases received daily.
MTRH CEO welcomed the collaboration between Government of Kenya and Japan, through the Ministry of Health, saying the 2,000 patients attended at MTRH daily will now have access to advanced diagnostics since the Hospital is a one-stop-shop for all sub-specialized healthcare services.
Dr. Kirwa also called on Kenyans to register into Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF), noting SHIF covers all services available at MTRH.
The envoy, who was taken on a guided tour of Renal Unit, Hemato Oncology & Radiothetapy Centre, appreciated the Diagnostics Centre and the various specialized services.He thereafter handed over an all terrain ambulance to MTRH Board and Management.
