MTRH Joins the World in Marking the World Kidney Day
Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital led by the Chief Executive Officer Dr. Philip Kirwa today joined the World in marking the World Kidney Day (WKD), 2025.
Observed every year on the second Thursday of March, the World Kidney Day is a global health campaign aimed at raising awareness about kidney health and the importance of early detection and prevention of kidney diseases.
This year’s theme is : “Are Your Kidneys OK? Detect Early, Protect Kidney Health.”
It emphasizes the need for early screening to rule out kidney disease before it progresses to advanced stages where it presents a burden to both the patient and the healthcare system.
Dr. Peter Koech, Ag. Head of Nephrology Department, highlighted that there is need for prompt and continued screening as this can help avert complications and reduce the disease burden.
The CEO in his remarks, stated that the World Kidney Day provides an opportunity for Kenyans to understand and reflect on their health and establish actions for sustaining healthy kidneys.
He added that a prevention-focused awareness campaign will help in lowering the kidney disease burden by identifying risk factors like uncontrolled blood pressure, diabetes , cardiovascular disease and obesity.
Early detection can make a huge impact through simple blood and urine tests, which also help in diagnosis before the disease becomes severe.
The Nephrology Department conducted free screening for kidney health at MTRH’s Memorial Grounds.
