Board Chair : I am proud of MTRH
Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) Board Chair, Sitoyo Lopokoiyit, MBS, has commended MTRH Leadership and Staff for sustaining excellence in healthcare service delivery.
” I operate in the Fintech space besides serving across other fields, but my true passion is in healthcare; for health is wealth. I am elated that the team at MTRH is lessening the burden of Kenyans afflicted by the burden of cancer among other diseases.”
He observed that while the fiscal space is tightening in Kenya and beyond, MTRH has continued to thrive through engaging cost- containment measures. However, he stated that there is need to leverage on technology including artificial intelligence (AI), to keep up with the latest trends in healthcare technology so as to improve on patient care and turnaround time in diagnostic services.
The Board Chair was addressing a two-day Board Retreat (22nd to 23rd May, 2025) at a Kisumu hotel.
Speaking at the same event, CEO Dr. Philip Kirwa expressed gratitude to the government through the Ministry of Health for the financial support and infrastructural development extended to MTRH, the Board for providing oversight and foresight to the management as well as development partners for their immense support.
He added that the MTRH Strategy (2023-2028) has fostered resilience amidst increasing operational expenses and challenges related to Human Resources for Health (HRH).

This year, the Retreat was being held under the theme: “Beyond Today; Advancing Universal Healthcare Coverage (UHC) and Specialized Healthcare.”

State Department for Medical Services -Ministry of Health), Prof. Tenge Kuremu (Principal, Moi University College of Health Sciences), Dr. Carol Hunja (Alt. PS State Department for Higher Education and Research-Ministry of Education), Dr. Erneo Nyakiba & Judith Jerotich (Independent Directors), Dr. Brenda Molonko (Alt. PS, National Treasury), George Ombua (Rep. State Corporations), and Peris Birichi (Alt. Attorney General).
AMPATH officials included: Prof. S. Kimaiyo (Chief of Party- USAID AMPATH Uzima, Prof. W. Nyandiko (Executive Director-AMPATH, Dr. J. Laktabai (Deputy Executive Director-AMPATH Care) and Dr. Kara Wools-Kaloustian, MD (AMPATH Consortium.)
Accompanying the CEO were: Senior Director Administration & Finance (SD A&F), Dr. Tarus B. Kipchumba, Ag. Senior Director Clinical Services (SDCS), Dr. Owen Menach and a representation of the Hospital Management Team.
