MTRH marks World Cancer Day
Moi Teaching & Referral Hospital (MTRH) marked the World Cancer Day on 4th February, 2024.The Ag. CEO Dr. Philip Kirwa led the Hospital by flagging off the sensitization walk through the streets of Eldoret town with MTRH partners.
World Cancer Day, commemorated on 4th February annually, aims to raise awareness on fundamental cancer issues.Between 2022 and 2024, the focus of World Cancer Day is to help “Close the cancer gap” with 2024 marking the third and final year of the campaign.
The theme for this year is: “Together, we challenge those in power” encompassing the global demand for leaders to prioritize and invest in cancer prevention and care and to do more to achieve a just and cancer-free world.
Dr. Jesse Opakas, MTRH’s Director of Hemato-Oncology, affirmed that the Hospital performs free cervical and breast cancer screening.
In his remarks, the Ag. CEO urged Kenyans to go for cancer screening stating that early diagnosis is key to recovery and management of many types of cancer. He added that the technology has allowed for early detection of Cancers, easing the burden of care while increasing the chances of cure and survival.
MTRH Hemato-Oncology Directorate manages Cancer patients through a full spectrum of care including screening, surgery, chemotherapy, targeted therapies, and radiotherapy; with the most common cancers being breast cancer, cervical cancer, prostate cancer in men, and colorectal cancer.
