‎MTRH ROLLS OUT CONSTRUCTION OF KENYA’S FIRST SPECIALIZED PAEDIATRIC NEURODEVELOPMENTAL CENTRE

Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) has embarked on the construction of a Paediatric Neurodevelopmental Centre to expand access to specialized healthcare, rehabilitation and developmental support for children with neurodevelopmental conditions.
‎
‎On 5th November 2026, MTRH Chief Executive Officer, Dr Philip Kirwa, officially handed over the site for the construction of the centre, which is expected to be the first of its kind in Kenya.
‎
‎The project is scheduled for completion within twelve months and will provide an integrated model of healthcare, rehabilitation, education and family support services.
‎
‎The new centre will bridge these gaps by bringing coordinated, multidisciplinary services closer to children and their families within the hospital.
‎
‎The Paediatric Neurodevelopmental Centre is strategically located adjacent to the Shoe4Africa Children’s Hospital, Riley Mother and Baby Hospital and the Mental Health & Rehabilitative Services Unit.
‎
‎Its proximity to these facilities will strengthen collaboration and continuity of care across maternal, paediatric, mental health and rehabilitation services.
‎
‎The suitable location will also facilitate collaboration among the relevant directorates and healthcare professionals involved in the assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of children with developmental challenges.
‎
‎Through an integrated, multidisciplinary approach, the centre will support children’s developmental progress, enhance their functional abilities and improve their overall quality of life.
‎
‎Speaking during the project launch, Dr. Kirwa highlighted the centre’s significance in strengthening specialized healthcare delivery in the region.
‎
‎“At completion, in twelve months’ time, the centre will strengthen the capacity of the two directorates of Paediatrics and Mental Health and Rehabilitative Services to provide specialized services to hundreds of children in this region,” said Dr Kirwa.
‎
‎The project is being implemented through a partnership between MTRH and the Indiana Institute for Global Health Kenya.
