HEALTH PS DR. OUMA OLUGA VISITS MTRH

‎The Principal Secretary, State Department of Medical Services, Ministry of Health Dr. Ouma Oluga made his maiden visit to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) on 28th April 2025 to familiarize himself with Hospital services.‎

‎The PS, who was received by members of the Hospital Board and Management, said he has been encouraged with the leadership role that MTRH has taken over the years to ensure Kenyans access quality healthcare at all levels.‎He pointed out that he associates well and is proud of the work that happens at MTRH in serving millions of people.‎

‎Dr. Oluga said that as stakeholders in health, all institutions under the Ministry of Health have a single role to achieve together-implement the Government’s Universal Health Coverage mandate.‎

‎The PS pointed out that the work done by MTRH has been flagged to have contributed immensely to national health policy and planning in the Ministry. He urged the Hospital Management to sustain the same going into the future.‎” There are three pillars which form a strong vehicle of efficiency in the health sector; restoring public trust and confidence through maintaining high integrity,” he said.‎Every health worker should, therefore, understand their role at every level and deliver their best. He called for unity of purpose among all the institutions in the Ministry of Health.

‎‎Dr. Oluga also lauded Hospital leadership for supporting the counties (27 Counties in Western Kenya), covering a population of over 25 million people.‎He observed that MTRH has been resilient and innovative yet sustaining collaborations, which has made the hospital be a leader on training and research in the Region.

‎He lauded the partnerships between MTRH and its international partners led by North America and Europe.‎

‎While challenging all institutions under the Ministry of Health, Dr. Oluga prevailed on all workers to focus on quality work, saying workers’ presence at their stations is where service delivery meets the expectations of those seeking services.‎

‎While receiving the Principal Secretary, MTRH Chief Executive Officer Dr. Philip Kirwa presented the Hospital’s huge mandate of 1.5 million patients treated annually, 60 thousand surgeries done per year. This is in addition to the 2 million laboratory tests done annually at MTRH Biosafety Laboratories.‎

‎Dr. Kirwa also said the Hospital has allocated Social Health Authority (SHA) a whole floor in its Financial Services Centre complex to speed up service delivery on medical insurance to the thousands of people seeking healthcare services at the Hospital daily.‎The Principal Secretary also toured the Hospital’s specialized projects that included Radiotherapy services, Renal Centre, Cathlab, and specialized MRI services.‎

‎The PS was accompanied by the Ag. CEO, National Syndemic Diseases Control Council, Douglas Bosire, and the representative of the CEO, Social Health Authority, Agnes Tuiyot.
