The Kenya Psychiatric Association (KPA) on September 3, 2025, held a Mental Health Walk in Eldoret to honour the legacy of the late Dr. Edith Kwobah coinciding with the 17th Annual KPA Scientific Conference.

‎The conference started with a memorial walk celebrating Dr. Kwobah, a passionate Consultant Psychiatrist who transformed Kenya’s mental health landscape.

‎She championed community-based mental health care, decentralized services, and fought to reduce stigma. Her legacy lives on through the MTRH Dr. Edith Kwobah Nawiri Recovery and Skills Centre, a transitional home offering rehabilitation and skills training for individuals with mental illness.

‎This conference was held under the theme: “Community Mental Health in the 21st Century: Innovation, Integration, and Impact” which is in sync with Dr. Kwobah’s vision of accessible and integrated mental health services.

‎The Chief Guest, MTRH CEO Dr. Philip Kirwa, commended KPA’s commitment to advancing mental health care while recognizing the instrumental role played by Dr. Charles Kwobah and family in sustaining Dr. Edith’s legacy.

‎Prof. Frank Njenga also paid tribute, celebrating her ground-breaking contributions in changing the narrative on mental health.

‎KPA President Dr. Mercy Karanja praised Dr. Kwobah’s tireless efforts in combating stigma and restoring dignity to mental health patients, noting the MTRH Nawiri Centre as a shining model.

‎Speaking on behalf of the family, Dr. Charles Kwobah expressed gratitude to KPA and MTRH for their continued support and received a special recognition in honour of the late Dr. Edith Kwobah.

‎We extend heartfelt appreciation to KPA members nationwide, MTRH staff, and all partners who joined in making the event a success. Together, we continue to advance the cause of mental health and well-being in Kenya.

‎Other distinguished guests included; Dr. Douglas Gaitho (representing Chief of Party, USAID AMPATH Uzima), Dr. Simon Njuguna, and Dr. Saina Chelagat (Ag. Director, Mental Health, MTRH) among others.
