US Chargé d’Affaires Praises Kenya–US Health Partnership
The United States Chargé d’Affaires to Kenya, Ms. Susan M. Burns, has commended the strong partnership between the American people and Kenya in advancing healthcare during a visit to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) today, April 9, 2026.
During the visit, Ms. Burns lauded the impact of collaborative health programs implemented through the Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare (AMPATH), noting their significant contribution to improving access to medical care, research, and training in HIV and other infectious diseases across the Western Kenya region.
Ms. Burns was received by MTRH Chief Executive Officer Dr. Philip Kirwa and members of the AMPATH Executive Board led by Prof. Sylvester Kimaiyo. She toured various specialized patient care projects within the Hospital.
Speaking during the visit, Dr. Kirwa expressed appreciation for the continued collaboration, noting that the visit reflects sustained trust and confidence in the Kenya–US partnership. He highlighted that the collaboration, spanning over 30 years, has positively impacted millions of Kenyans through the MTRH-AMPATH program.
Dr. Kirwa further emphasized that the enduring partnership between Kenya and the United States has significantly advanced healthcare delivery, education, and research at MTRH.
Currently, MTRH serves a population of over 25 million people across Kenya and the wider East and Central Africa region, including Eastern Uganda, South Sudan, Northern Tanzania, and parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Through its partnership with the Moi University College of Health Sciences and global collaborators under the AMPATH Consortium led by Indiana University, MTRH continues to provide advanced multi-specialty care, training and research.
