Health PS Dr. Ouma Oluga Visits MTRH New Multi-Specialty Hospital to Review Construction Progress
The Principal Secretary, State Department for Medical Services, Dr. Ouma Oluga, today, April 24, 2026 visited Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) to assess the construction progress of the 4,000-bed Multi-Specialty Hospital, a flagship project set to transform healthcare delivery in Kenya and position the country as a leading medical tourism destination in the region.
Dr. Oluga, who was received by the Hospital Board and Chief Executive Officer, commended the significant progress made on the project and reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to strengthening sub-specialized healthcare infrastructure under the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) agenda.
Speaking during the inspection, the PS noted that the new Hospital will play a critical role in reducing outbound medical referrals by providing advanced super-specialized and sub-specialized healthcare services locally.
“This project is a game changer for Kenya’s health sector. The standards of construction are impressive and reflect the level of excellence we envision for our national referral facilities. Once complete, this Hospital will significantly scale up the country’s medical tourism potential and reduce the need for Kenyans to seek specialized treatment abroad,” said Dr. Oluga.
He further emphasized that the Hospital will support healthcare training, medical research, innovation, and economic growth through job creation and contribution to the national GDP.
“The Government remains committed to ensuring this project is delivered within the stipulated timelines and budget. I urge the contractor to maintain the excellent quality of work and uphold the international standards already evident on site,” he added.
The state-of-the-art International Hospital is expected to strengthen Kenya’s healthcare system by expanding access to advanced treatment options, enhancing patient experience, and accelerating the realization of Universal Health Coverage.
Upon completion, the Hospital will position MTRH as a premier Centre for specialized care, teaching, and research in Africa.
